Land Rover is looking to expand its model line-up with the addition of such models as extended wheelbase and convertible versions of the Evoque, as well as a production version of its DC100 and a successor to its tough-as-nails Defender.
A source speaking to AutoCar UK has claimed that Land Rover has undertaken an ambitious plan to double its global sales figures by 2020 by introducing a host of new models to its stable.
Land Rover’s design director, Gerry McGovern, has been quoted as saying that the firm will embrace an “holistic approach” to its new model development encompassing its three key product areas; luxury, leisure and utility.
Luxury: Among the models on the table for Range Rover’s six-model expansion plan are an Evoque ‘XL’ (a long-wheelbase version that slots in between the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport) and a production version of the Evoque convertible shown at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. There are also suggestions of a four-metre-long three-door Range Rover to plug the gap between the Evoque and the Range Rover.
Leisure: Five models have been touted for this segment, including an entry-level Freelander, as well as five- and seven-seater variants. An all-new Dicovery underpinned by an all-aluminium chassis is also on the cards.
Utility: Land Rover will reportedly use the Evoque/Freelander platform for a production version of the DC100. A replacement for the Defender offered in a variety of configurations (five- and seven-seaters, crew cab) is also part of the expansion plan.
With China and Russia emerging as major markets, especially in terms of luxurious limited-edition models, Land Rover will also usher in a greater variety of bespoke trim lines to accommodate well-heeled clientele.
